The new Kindle with ads

The latest version of the Kindle has been available for a month now, cheaper than ever. The caveat? It comes with ads.
I've spoken about this earlier here, but I wanted to check if there is a blog reader who has tried the new Kindle out. Is the $20 price cut worth it?
I know the ads are only when WiFi is on, and probably related to what an ebook reader would want to see.
Is this an acceptable trade off - what say You?

  1. I don't have a Kindle, but I don't like the idea. I would want a much bigger price cut if I'm going to subject myself to endless ads like that. If it's only a $20 difference, then I'd just pay for the ad-free version.

  2. Personally, I'd rather pay them the extra $20 and have my Kindle be ad-free for as long as I use it. And considering I only use it for books and only ever turn the WiFi on for about 5 minutes once a week, that's saying something.

It's great that the option's there for people who really don't mind having it be ad-supported, but for me, that'd be a deal-breaker, and if I didn't already have a Kindle, I'd be very reluctant to get one in the future. (Probably end up going with a competitor e-book reader instead, which I'm pretty sure is the opposite of Amazon's intention.)

  3. See, that $20 cut needs to be much more - like $100 or so, or else no one is going to choose it!
Why not just skip 3 cups of coffee and buy the no-ads version, right?

@biblio - that is exactly how I use my kindle too..I believe the ads only turn up when you are on the wifi :)

  4. I wouldn't buy it either with only $20 difference. No way. If it had differed that much between Wi-Fi and 3G, I would have gotten the more expensive one--that's how little the difference is.

Now, I don't have that option though, since I'm in Europe, but I'm not complaining.

Btw, I just answered your question (a bit late) about Camero the Assassin, if you wanted to know the answer. :)
